Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy Treatment for Varicose Veins
We can treat small varicose veins with a procedure called sclerotherapy. Your vascular specialist will inject your varicose vein with a chemical that causes it to collapse. Your body then absorbs the old vein, causing it to disappear and healthy veins take its place.
Sclerotherapy Side Effects
Sclerotherapy may cause side effects including:
- Allergic reactions
- Skin ulceration or discoloration
- Phlebitis (inflammation of the vein)
- Pain
- Swelling
- New varicose veins
Your vascular specialist will advise you on the best way to avoid or minimize these side effects.
Getting the Best Results from Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an effective way of treating varicose veins. It is an out-patient procedure that allows you to return to your normal level of activity almost immediately.
To achieve the best cosmetic result, you should:
- Elevate the affected leg
- Wrap the leg
For about 48 to 72 hours after the procedure, you should avoid:
- Going out into the sun
- Taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication
- Aerobic exercise
Insurance Coverage for Sclerotherapy
In general, insurance companies do not cover sclerotherapy since it is considered a cosmetic procedure. We will review the cost of your treatment with you prior to performing anything.
